Podiatry Care in Summer: Preventing pathologies and protecting foot health

20 June, 2025 | by Footstudy

With the arrival of summer, it becomes essential to reinforce foot care due to increased temperatures, sun exposure, and frequent activity in humid or public environments. Clinical practice shows that this time of year is associated with the worsening of certain foot pathologies and the appearance of new lesions, often preventable through appropriate preventive measures.

Common Foot Conditions in Summer:

Dermatophytosis and Onychomycosis
Humidity, combined with prolonged use of closed footwear and exposure to public areas (such as pools or locker rooms), promotes the development of fungal infections on the skin (tinea pedis) and nails (onychomycosis). These conditions must be diagnosed and treated early, with laboratory support whenever necessary.

Fissures and Hyperkeratosis
Foot skin tends to dry out due to heat and direct contact with abrasive surfaces. Lack of proper hydration and the presence of mechanical overpressure may lead to painful fissures and hyperkeratotic areas (calluses).

Blisters and Microtrauma
Wearing inappropriate footwear and increased perspiration promote friction, leading to blisters and minor skin injuries. If not properly managed, these may evolve into local infections or more complex scenarios in at-risk populations.

Exacerbation of Biomechanical Pathologies
Leisure activities such as long walks or sports on uneven surfaces can aggravate pre-existing conditions like plantar fasciitis, calcaneal spur, or metatarsalgia.

Clinical Recommendations for the Summer:

Preventive podiatric assessment:
Essential to detect early structural or dermatological changes and adjust the treatment plan according to the season.

Strict hygiene:
Wash the feet thoroughly and carefully dry the interdigital spaces.

Targeted hydration:
Use moisturising cream suitable for foot skin.

Sun protection:
Apply sunscreen to the dorsum of the foot – an often-neglected area vulnerable to sunburn.

Application of absorbent powder:
Indicated to control humidity, prevent fungal infections, and reduce friction in pressure areas.

At FootStudy, our summer podiatric approach includes clinical assessment, prevention, and treatment strategies tailored to the season and the functional profile of each patient.
